MPA Student Success Scholarship

Bringing the dream of a post-baccalaureate education closer to reality is what the City of Corpus Christi Employee Education Assistance Program helps fund. As the cost to attend colleges and universities continue to rise, the City supports a range of opportunities to ensure our employees have the chance to pursue higher education.

Through partnership with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Master’s in Public Administration program, when possible, the City of Corpus Christi makes the best effort to provide our employees with the Student Success Scholarship – a 100% scholarship program for 12 credit hours of the 36 credit hour Master’s program, exclusively for employee of the City of Corpus Christi.Texas A&M-Corpus Christi provided the scholarship at 50% and the City matched for the other 50%.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi provides the scholarship at 50% and the City matches so the employees get a 100% scholarship to the MPA program. The total award is $4,000 per employee per year ($2,000 contributed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and $2,000 contributed by The City of Corpus Christi education assistance program).

WHAT IS THE MPA PROGRAM?

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program is designed to prepare students for managerial careers in the public and not-for-profit sectors of the economy. The MPA has been designed to meet the needs of full-time employees wishing to earn their degree through part-time study. Students in the program will take a core of eight courses in order to increase their understanding of administrative theory, policy making, data analysis, public budgeting and finance, and human resource management.

Additionally, each student will select one of four program tracks, which specify the remaining course work in their program. The student may choose from specialized tracks in public management, public safety, healthcare administration, and non-profit management.

Student Learning Outcomes
Students will:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the underlying concepts and principles of public administration and the ability to evaluate and interpret them in the context of the Texas Coastal Bend community, the state and the nation;
  • demonstrate the ability to interpret, evaluate and present qualitative and quantitative data, develop lines of argument and make sound judgments in accordance with theories and concepts of public administration;
  • evaluate the appropriateness of policy and management options related to the public sectors and communicate results accurately, reliably and with structured coherent arguments;
  • conduct and implement budgeting operations, policy and program analysis; and
  • value lifelong learning in order to develop new skills within a public management environment.

Eligibility

  1. Must be a City of Corpus Christi employee employed in a full-time budgeted position.
  2. Must be a City of Corpus Christi employee in good standing with their department and the City organization as determined by Human Resources employee records.
  3. Must be able to qualify for enrollment and enroll in the TAMUCC Master of Public Administration Program meeting all requirements for graduate enrollment.
  4. Applicant must be a new graduate admission in Fall 2024 who has a cumulative grade point average of a 3.0 or higher or who has a 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work.
  5. Must be a U.S. resident.
  6. Applicant must register for a minimum of 6 hours each semester in the MPA program.
  7. Employee must be with the City 6 months or longer by close of application window.
  8. No GRE is required.

Terms

  1. This is a one-time award for the 2024 – 2025 academic year at TAMUCC.
  2. The award amount from TAMUCC is $2,000; to be awarded in the fall semester ($1,000 fall semester and $1,000 spring semester). 
  3. Applicants receiving other University scholarships for an amount below $2,000 are eligible for this scholarship. However, for those receiving this scholarship, the total amount of all TAMUCC scholarships cannot exceed $2,000 ($1,000 for Fall 2024 and $1,000 for Spring 2025).
  4. Applicants cannot receive this scholarship in addition to University teaching or research assistantships in the academic year 2024-2025.
  5. Continuing students will have the opportunity to apply for departmental and university scholarship and financial aid in subsequent years.
